Why Study The Life Sciences?

Diane Olin and StudentsThe study of life is deeply rooted in the human spirit. We keep pets, nurture house plants, and maintain zoos and aquariums, all examples of our connectedness to life in its diverse forms. We ponder about the latest health concerns and often ask questions such as... What is the aging process and can we delay it ? What causes autoimmune diseases? Are there gender differences in the human brain? Biology can be thought of as human curiosity about all forms of life and about life processes. And what an exciting time to be studying the Life Sciences! All it takes is a quick look at a newspaper to see the impact that Life Science research is having on our lives in the 21st Century. From stem cell research controversies to the effects of deforestation on biodiversity in the tropics, the Life Sciences are integral to modern society and the future of the planet. Non-Biology majors as well as Biology majors need to be cognizant of the concepts behind these issues as they affect everyone. As your instructor, I want to share with you my passion for science we delve into the details of the bioworld that you've been wondering about. The plan is for you to do this in an investigative manner. So whether you are taking Health Science, General Biology or Anatomy and Physiology this semester, get ready for your human spirit to be lifted!
