Grammar Help

The best place to get help with grammar, sentence structure and other style concerns is our Writing Center at RCC. In it, you can find grammar exercises, textbooks, reference books, and lots of live bodies to answer your questions. But, if you aren't on campus or you are feeling a little people shy, these websites are good alternatives.

  • One of the best grammar sites there is, complete with exercises, explanations, quizzes and all sorts of goodies is this one, formerly known as Darling's Guide to Grammar. You can also access this directly from the RCC Writing and Reading Center page.

http://www.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/

  • This is the best ever online writing lab website. Some of the information refers to the actual brick and mortar writing center at Purdue University. The main thing you will probably want to make use of are there handouts - especially the ones on grammar, punctuation & spelling.

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/

  • This site is very comprehensive, covering everything from MLA style to essay structure, and of course, grammar. The grammar sections, under "Mechanics" on the menu at the left are very thorough. Give this one a look.

  • As they say themselves, "This Handbook explains and illustrates the basic grammatical rules concerning parts of speech, phrases, clauses, sentences and sentence elements, and common problems of usage."

  • This site has explanations and exercises for different grammar rules.

  • This site the "Grammar Slammer" is mostly a very organized set of grammar rules. So this is best used by someone who knows exactly what question they want to ask, or has some idea of the correct usage, but just wants to double check.

  • This site is a great resource for double-checking your MLA formatting style. It has rules for in-text citations, list of works cited and a sample paper so you can see what it is supposed to look at when it is all done.
