WHY INTELLIGENT STUDENTS SOMETIMES FAIL |
||
| 1. | LACK OF MOTIVATION | Motivation is what keeps you from giving up when you are faced with difficulties. |
| 2. | POOR TIME MANAGEMENT | Do not become over-committed so that you cannot devote the necessary time to your studies. |
| 3. | LACK OF PERSEVERANCE | Don't be too quick to give up. Learning a new skill or a new subject is not always easy. It always requires much repetition and an expenditure of much mental energy. |
| 4. | INABILITY TO APPLY CONCEPTS TO DIFFERENT SITUATIONS |
Remember that you do not have a true understanding of an idea or concept until you are able to recognize it's application in a new situation. |
| 5. | INABILITY TO COMPLETE TASKS | Work through every task and don't quit until it is done. Identify the areas that are giving you problems and don't be bashful about getting appropriate assistance, as required. |
| 6. | FEAR OF FAILURE | Don't be reluctant to explore new areas of interest or venture out into new territories for fear of failure. You can and should try to learn from your failures and move on. |
| 7. | PROCRASTINATION | Procrastination can lead to stress, substandard or marginal work, and poor performance on exams. Don't put off doing required work. College work requires much more time and effort than high school. |
| 8. | EXCESSIVE DEPENDENCY ON OTHERS | Depending too much upon your professor or anyone else to tell you everything you need to know for an exam is a recipe for failure. Take responsibility for your own learning. |
| 9. | TOO LITTLE OR TOO MUCH SELF-CONFIDENCE | Too little confidence can prevent you from building on your strengths. Too much confidence can prevent development of your areas of weakness. |
| 10. | INABILITY TO DELAY SELF-GRATIFICATION | Some classes will have some graded activities that require you to wait for feedback on your progress. Stay motivated by creating milestones for yourself to measure your own progress. |
| 11. | LACK OF BALANCE BETWEEN CRITICAL, ANALYTICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING | College level work requires all types of thinking other than just rote memory. It is one of the major differences between college and high school. |
| 12. | NOT ENOUGH READING | Academic success at the college level requires reading, reading and more reading. |
